History & Background

  • 1958
Built in Bristol by Charles Hill & Sons Ltd as the MV Rossmore, a compact steel tugboat designed for harbour and coastal towing duties. She entered service in the UK before being sold on.
  • 1969
Renamed MV Rossgarth following a change of ownership. She continued working tugboat duties under this name for over a decade before being sold again and brought to Malta.
  • 1981
Renamed MV Rozi in Malta, where she worked as a harbour tug in Grand Harbour. The vessel had been operating in Maltese waters as Rossgarth before the rename. The name Rozi has stayed with her ever since, even in her current life on the seabed.
  • 1992
MV Rozi was deliberately sunk on 10 September 1992 by Captain Morgan Cruises off Cirkewwa to serve as an attraction for their tourist submarine trips. Her engine and propeller were removed before scuttling. She settled perfectly upright on a sandy bottom at 34 metres.
  • Today
Over three decades of colonisation have transformed the Rozi into one of Malta's richest artificial reefs. Sponges and gorgonian sea fans encrust every surface. Grouper, moray eels, scorpionfish, octopus, and barracuda are resident year-round.

The MV Rozi is a 33-metre steel tugboat resting perfectly upright on a sandy plateau off Cirkewwa, in the protected waters of the Cirkewwa Marine Park in NW Malta. Her mast reaches to approximately 20 metres, making the upper deck and superstructure accessible to any Open Water diver. The bridge, cabins, and forward deck structure are largely intact. Deeper sections from 22 metres down take divers through the engine room openings, past porthole rows, and down to the dramatic bow at 34 metres. The engine and propeller were removed before scuttling, but the bow itself is a striking centrepiece at maximum depth. The GPS position is 35.9898°N, 14.3269°E. The wreck is marked by a yellow mooring buoy in summer months.

Site Conditions

The MV Rozi lies in the protected waters of Cirkewwa on the NW corner of Malta. The site faces northwest and can be affected by swell in winter months. On calm days it offers some of the best visibility in Malta, the open Mediterranean water is unaffected by harbour silting. The sandy plateau around the wreck is typically glassy calm. Current is usually minimal at wreck depth. Shore access is possible from the Cirkewwa ferry terminal area; the wreck is also reached by short boat transfer. Night dives on the Rozi are exceptional.

Entry & Access

Shore entry is possible from the Cirkewwa ferry terminal area. The wreck is also dived by short boat transfer from Sliema or Cirkewwa. Giant stride entry, then descend to the mooring line. Suitable for all fitness levels on the upper sections.

Conditions

Generally calm at wreck depth year-round. Light surface swell possible in winter and spring on the exposed northwest side. The sandy plateau surrounding the hull is sheltered and visibility is consistently among Malta's best at this site.

Night Diving

The MV Rozi at night is exceptional. Moray eels emerge to hunt on the sandy plateau, octopus move freely across the hull, and the sponge-covered superstructure glows under torch light. Bioluminescence can be spectacular in late summer. Torch and DSMB required.

Safety & Requirements

Before You Dive

Open Water

Upper Deck Certification

Open Water divers can access the upper deck, railings, and wheelhouse from approximately 20 metres on a guided dive. The sponge-covered superstructure in excellent natural light is ideal for newly certified divers seeking their first wreck experience.

Advanced OW

Engine Room & Deep Sections

Advanced Open Water certification is required to access the engine room and deeper sections of the hull from 22 metres down. A Wreck Diver specialty is recommended for those wishing to penetrate the interior. diveshack guides can introduce divers to these sections safely.

Visibility

Visibility Note

Visibility at Cirkewwa is consistently among Malta's best, ranging from 20 to 35 metres depending on season and weather. Check surface conditions before diving in winter and spring months when NW swell can affect entry. On calm days the water is exceptionally clear.

Gas Planning

Gas Planning

At 34m on air, no-decompression time is approximately 14 minutes. Nitrox 32% extends this to approximately 22 minutes. Plan the deep bow section first, then ascend to explore the upper deck and superstructure. Carry a DSMB for ascents from the sandy plateau.
