Victorian Guns
Fort Ricasoli

Three Victorian-era Rifled Muzzle Loader cannons rest on the sandy seabed at the entrance to Grand Harbour, dropped during harbour clearance operations in the early 20th century. At 2-12m they are accessible to Open Water divers, yet the setting is extraordinary: Valletta's fortifications rise above the surface, and the guns themselves are genuine 19th-century naval ordnance still intact on the sand.

History & Background

  • 1870s
Three Armstrong RML (Rifled Muzzle Loader) guns installed at Fort Ricasoli as part of Malta's Victorian coastal artillery network. The guns commanded the southern approach to Grand Harbour.
  • Early 1900s
As naval technology advanced, the heavy guns were decommissioned. Rather than salvage, the guns were pushed from the fort into the harbour approach during post-WWI clearance operations.
  • Today
All three guns lie on sand at 2-12m, orientated roughly as they fell. The carriages have disintegrated but the gun barrels are intact. Dense marine growth covers the metal; schools of bream circle the barrels, and octopus are common in the breach mechanisms.

The Victorian Guns are one of Malta's most accessible dives and one of its most historically unusual. Three 10-tonne cast-iron barrels on sand at a maximum of 12m, within a UNESCO World Heritage harbour setting. The site connects directly with the Grand Harbour dive cluster: a natural pairing with the HMS Maori or Fort St Elmo Reef for a full day of Valletta diving.
