The gas that goes into your cylinder matters as much as the gear on your back.

Technical divers rely on precisely blended gas mixtures for every dive. A cylinder filled to the wrong enriched air percentage is not a minor inconvenience, it is a safety issue. The SSI Gas Blender course (ISO 13293) teaches you to produce reliable, analysed, and documented gas mixes yourself, using industry-standard partial pressure and continuous flow techniques.

The Trimix Gas Blender upgrade extends this to helium-based blends, covering the calculations and procedures required to produce bottom and deco gases for technical dives beyond 40m. Both courses are academic and practical, completed in 6 to 8 hours each. There are no open water sessions and no diving certification is required to enrol.

  • Understand gas physics, partial pressure laws, and oxygen toxicity limits
  • Blend enriched air nitrox using partial pressure blending
  • Blend enriched air nitrox using continuous flow blending
  • Analyse finished blends accurately and document results
  • Identify and maintain oxygen-compatible equipment
  • Blend trimix (helium + nitrox) for technical dives (Trimix upgrade)
  • Calculate and produce bottom gas and decompression gas mixes (Trimix upgrade)

Trimix Gas Blender Upgrade

Extends your certification to helium-based gas mixing. Prerequisite is the SSI Gas Blender (Nitrox) cert. Can be completed immediately after, or as a standalone enrolment if you already hold the Nitrox Blender cert. €285 course + €94 eLearning.

One day. Complete gas blending competency.

The SSI Gas Blender (ISO 13293) program combines academic sessions with practical application sessions. Nitrox Gas Blender covers academic sessions 1–5 plus practical sessions 1 and 2. Trimix Gas Blender requires all academic sessions plus practical sessions 1 through 4. No diving certification required to enrol. Minimum age 18.

FAQ

Common questions

No diving certification is required. The only prerequisite listed in the SSI Gas Blender standard (ISO 13293) is minimum age 18. The course is open to anyone who meets the age requirement and has access to the required blending equipment during training. The Trimix Gas Blender upgrade does require the Nitrox Gas Blender certification first.
The Nitrox Gas Blender course covers oxygen-enriched air blending using partial pressure and continuous flow methods. You learn to produce, analyse, and document enriched air fills from 21% to 40% oxygen. The Trimix Gas Blender upgrade adds helium-based gas mixing, used in technical diving beyond 40m. It covers calculating and producing bottom gas and decompression gas mixes containing helium, nitrox, and oxygen. The two courses can be completed on the same day in sequence.
No. Both the Nitrox Gas Blender and Trimix Gas Blender courses are entirely academic and practical skills-based. There are no open water dive sessions. The course covers theory, gas physics, oxygen safety procedures, and hands-on blending practice using cylinders and mixing equipment in a controlled workshop setting.
The SSI eLearning licence (€94 per course) gives access to the full digital Gas Blender study materials via the SSI app or web platform. It covers gas physics, Dalton's Law, oxygen toxicity limits, partial pressure calculations, blending ratios, equipment compatibility, and safe handling and documentation procedures. You complete it at your own pace before attending the practical session.
The SSI Gas Blender certification qualifies you to blend gases for yourself and for other certified divers within the SSI standards you have been trained to. Any commercial supply of diving gases is subject to applicable local and national regulations and may require additional permits or qualifications. If you intend to blend commercially or for a dive centre, check the specific requirements in your jurisdiction before doing so.
All cancellations must be submitted in writing to info@divemalta.com. 14 or more days notice: full refund. 6 to 13 days notice: 50% refund. 5 days or fewer: no refund. SSI eLearning fees are non-refundable once accessed. If diveshack cancels due to circumstances outside our control, you receive a full reschedule or full refund. Full terms at divemalta.com/terms.
