Course Overview

From 80m to 100m. The highest recreational tec certification.

SSI XR Hypoxic Trimix 100 builds directly on Trimix 80 certification, extending the operating depth to 100m. Divers use leaner hypoxic bottom gas mixes with higher helium fractions, manage significantly longer decompression obligations, and operate with zero margin for error in gas planning and procedure. The course covers advanced gradient factor decompression, HPNS risk management at extreme depth, multi-gas switch discipline with two stage cylinders, and contingency procedures for equipment failure at 100m.

On completion you hold the SSI XR Hypoxic Trimix 100 certification - the highest depth rating available in SSI's recreational technical programme. In Malta, 100m access opens the outer faces of major drop-offs and the deepest sections of offshore structure well beyond recreational limits.

  • Plan and execute multi-gas dives to 100m with extended decompression
  • Select and validate hypoxic trimix blends for 100m operation with reduced O2 fractions
  • Manage 45-60 minutes of planned decompression across multiple gas switches
  • Recognise and mitigate HPNS risk through descent rate management and mix selection
  • Operate with two stage cylinders in full tec configuration
  • Execute contingency procedures for lost deco gas at extreme depth

  • Decompression stops executed from dive computer
  • Instructor assessment of readiness to proceed to 90m
Dive
02

80m Warm-Up

80m

Full Trimix 80 profile as baseline before the 100m extension. Gas management, decompression execution, and HPNS symptom review. Briefing includes transition to Trimix 10/70 for subsequent dives.

  • Gas turn pressure discipline with TX 12/65
  • Narcosis and HPNS self-assessment at 80m
  • Decompression obligation approximately 25-35 minutes
  • Introduction to Trimix 10/70 handling for next dive
Dive
03

90m Extension

90m

First dive with Trimix 10/70 bottom gas. Lean hypoxic mix with high helium fraction. Pre-breathe from EAN50 before switching to trimix below 6m on descent. Decompression obligation approximately 35-45 minutes.

  • Pre-breathe protocol and EAN50 to TX10/70 switch on descent
  • Managing longer decompression ceiling at 90m
  • CNS oxygen accumulation tracking across all gas phases
  • Gas turn pressure with leaner mix - tighter margins
Dive
04

90m Consolidation

90m

Second 90m profile. Refine decompression execution, HPNS observation, and ascent rate discipline. Any adjustment to gradient factor settings based on day 3 experience. Sign-off required before 100m certification dive.

  • Decompression profile refinement based on day 3 data
  • HPNS tremor and visual disturbance self-monitoring
  • Ascent rate: maximum 3m per minute above first deco stop
  • Post-dive CNS oxygen recovery period confirmed before next dive
Dive
05

100m Approach

95m

Penultimate dive. Full multi-gas profile to 95m with extended decompression. Final assessment before the certification dive. Any issues at this stage postpone the 100m dive.

  • Full planned decompression - approximately 50-60 minutes in water
  • O2 stop management at 6m and 3m
  • Team diving at extreme depth - team separation protocol
  • Certification dive readiness confirmed by instructor
Dive
06

100m Certification Dive

100m

The qualifying dive. Gas plan prepared and signed off the evening before. Full TX10/70 profile to 100m, complete decompression schedule executed. SSI XR Hypoxic Trimix 100 certification issued on successful completion.

  • Independent gas plan prepared and signed off by student
  • Controlled descent to 100m: maximum 18m per minute
  • Decompression profile followed precisely - no deviation
  • Certification sign-off on successful surface
Gases Used

Advanced three-gas configuration.

Trimix 100 uses a leaner hypoxic bottom gas than Trimix 80, with a higher helium fraction to reduce narcosis and HPNS risk at extreme depth.

Trimix 10/70
10% O2 / 70% He / 20% N2
MOD 100m

Very lean hypoxic mix with high helium fraction. Mandatory pre-breathe from EAN50 below 6m on descent. Descent rate limited to 18m per minute to reduce HPNS risk.

EAN50
50% O2 / 50% N2
MOD 21m

Travel and transition gas - surface to 21m on descent and from 21m on ascent. Mandatory switch from trimix at 21m. Used throughout the extended decompression ascent.

O2 100%
100% Oxygen
MOD 6m

Extended decompression at 6m and 3m. At 100m bottom times, CNS accumulation across multiple dives is critical. Total dive CNS must not exceed 80% per day.

At 100m, total in-water time including decompression is typically 90-120 minutes per dive. Gas costs are additional and itemised at booking. Two stage cylinders required - one EAN50, one O2.
Equipment Required

Full advanced tec configuration.

Trimix 100 requires a more complete configuration than Trimix 80. Two stage cylinders are mandatory. A drysuit is strongly recommended.

Back-mount doubles minimum 2x15L recommended
Technical wing and harness rated to 100m+
Two primary DIN regulators - serviced within 12 months
Long-hose primary (200cm)
EAN50 stage cylinder with labelled regulator
O2 deco cylinder with labelled regulator
Multi-gas dive computer validated to 100m
Backup dive computer
Primary torch and backup torch
Primary reel plus spool
Two SMBs including one delayed
Drysuit (strongly recommended - 14-16 degrees at 100m in Malta)
Mandatory equipment check before the first dive of the course. All cylinders inspected and analysed. All equipment must be in current service.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need Trimix 80 before this course?
Yes. SSI XR Hypoxic Trimix 80 is a mandatory prerequisite and there are no recognised equivalents at this level. If you hold Trimix 80 from a different agency (PADI TecRec, IANTD, TDI) contact us and we will advise on crossover requirements.
How long is the decompression at 100m?
A 10-minute bottom time at 100m on a standard gradient factor generates 45-60 minutes of decompression obligation. Total in-water time including ascent is 90-120 minutes per dive. We plan conservatively and adjust based on conditions and CNS accumulation.
Is a drysuit mandatory?
Not mandatory but strongly recommended. Bottom temperature at 100m in Malta is consistently 14-16 degrees regardless of season. Extended decompression stops at these temperatures in a wetsuit are uncomfortable and carry hypothermia risk. Drysuit hire is available from diveshack - contact us early to confirm sizing.
Can I do Trimix 80 and 100 back to back?
Yes. We offer both certifications as a combined 6-day programme. Several dives serve dual purposes in the combined course, reducing total cost vs booking separately. Enquire for the combo programme.
What happens if conditions are not suitable for 100m on certification dive day?
We will not run the 100m certification dive in marginal conditions. If conditions require a postponement, we reschedule at no additional cost. Gas already blended is charged at cost.
