Closed-circuit rebreather training in Malta

The TDI JJ-CCR MOD 1 is the entry point into closed-circuit rebreather diving with one of the most capable units on the market. Unlike open-circuit scuba, the JJ-CCR recycles your breathing gas, dramatically extending bottom time and eliminating the bubble trail that disturbs marine life.

Malta offers ideal conditions for CCR training: warm, clear water year-round with visibility regularly exceeding 20 metres, a range of depths from shallow reef to open water, and wreck sites that reward extended bottom times the CCR makes possible.

  • JJ-CCR unit assembly, disassembly, and pre-dive checks
  • PO₂ management and oxygen toxicity protocols
  • Loop volume control and CCR buoyancy technique
  • Emergency bailout procedures and gas switching
  • Decompression planning on rebreather (Levels 2 and 3)
  • Helitrox gas management for deep technical diving (Level 3)

Certification Levels

Three levels within MOD 1

MOD 1 is a structured pathway. You progress through each level in sequence, with each building directly on the last. Most candidates complete Levels 1 and 2 in a single course visit. Level 3 (Helitrox) can be added in the same trip or on a return visit.

Level 1

Air Diluent No Decompression

Max 30m · No mandatory deco stops
  • JJ-CCR assembly, disassembly, and pre-dive checks
  • Gas management and loop volume control for buoyancy
  • Oxygen toxicity and hypoxia recognition and response
  • Emergency bailout procedures and open-circuit switch
  • 6 open water dives to consolidate all skills
Level 2

Air Diluent Decompression

Max 40m · Mandatory decompression stops
  • Decompression theory and dive planning on CCR
  • Extended bottom times with decompression obligations
  • Advanced emergency procedures for longer dives
  • Bailout gas switching during decompression ascent
  • Prerequisite: Level 1 complete
Level 3

Helitrox Decompression

Max 45m · Helium diluent · Reduces narcosis
  • Helitrox gas management: helium, oxygen, and nitrogen
  • Advanced decompression planning for deep extended dives
  • Narcosis reduction through helium diluent selection
  • Complex bailout and gas-switching techniques at depth
  • Prerequisite: Level 2 complete
Course Structure

How the course runs

Theory before water, water before open sea. The structure is deliberate: by the time you are in open water you have practised every skill in a controlled environment.

01

TDI eLearning

  • Completed before your arrival at diveshack
  • Rebreather physiology and PO₂ control principles
  • Oxygen toxicity: causes, symptoms, and prevention
  • CO₂ scrubber function and scrubber failure recognition
  • Dive planning for CCR: gas endurance, bailout calculation
  • eLearning purchased separately via TDI (€200)
02

Confined Water Training

  • First dives on the JJ-CCR in a controlled pool environment
  • Buoyancy control and loop volume management
  • Gas switching drills and bailout to open circuit
  • Rebreather electronics and O₂ sensor calibration
  • Manual diluent addition and oxygen flushing
  • Instructor feedback before any open water diving
03

Open Water Dives

  • 6 dives for Level 1 (Air Diluent No-Deco)
  • Additional dives for Level 2 decompression stop practice
  • Dives to 45m for Level 3 Helitrox gas management
  • Sites selected to match course depth and conditions
  • Full debrief after each dive with personalised feedback
  • Certification issued on successful completion
Course Requirements

Before you enrol

MOD 1 is not a beginner course. Candidates need solid open-circuit fundamentals before transitioning to rebreather. These requirements are TDI minimums.

Age

Minimum age 18

All TDI technical programmes require candidates to be at least 18 years old at the start of the course.

Cert

TDI Nitrox Diver or equivalent

A current Nitrox certification is the minimum entry requirement. Equivalent enriched air certifications from other agencies are accepted.

Dives

Minimum 20 logged dives

You need 20 open-circuit dives in your logbook before the course starts. Experience at depth is strongly recommended.

L2+

Advanced Nitrox + Deco Procedures for Levels 2 and 3

For Level 2 (40m deco) and Level 3 (Helitrox), TDI Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures certifications are required before or concurrent with the course.

FAQ

Common questions

The course requires the JJ-CCR unit specifically. If you do not yet own one, diveshack can arrange a rental for the duration of the course. Contact us when applying and we will confirm availability and rental cost. If you are considering purchasing a unit, we can also assist with sourcing.
MOD 1 covers the core JJ-CCR skill set: unit operation, decompression diving, and Helitrox to 45m, all with open-circuit bailout procedures. MOD 2 extends into more advanced applications including solo CCR diving and cave environments. MOD 1 is the required prerequisite for MOD 2 and is the appropriate starting point for all new CCR divers.
Yes. TDI (Technical Diving International) is one of the world's largest and most respected technical diving agencies. Your TDI JJ-CCR certification is recognised by dive operations, liveaboards, and technical diving facilities globally.
Levels 2 and 3 can be combined in the same visit provided you have sufficient time and meet the prerequisites for Level 3 (TDI Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures). A combined programme typically runs 7–8 days. Contact us when applying to discuss scheduling your full MOD 1 pathway.
A bailout cylinder is required for all open water dives. Typically this is an Al 7L or Al 11L stage cylinder. Gas fill for the bailout cylinder is charged at diveshack's standard fill station rates. Cylinder rental is available if you do not have your own stage cylinder.
Cancellations more than 7 days before the course start date receive a full refund of the course fee. Cancellations within 7 days forfeit the deposit. TDI eLearning is purchased directly through TDI and is subject to their refund policy. We are happy to reschedule with at least 48 hours notice. Weather-related cancellations are always rescheduled at no cost.
