SSI Perfect Buoyancy
Control every metre of your dive.

Buoyancy separates competent divers from great ones. This two-day SSI specialty course trains you to hold neutral buoyancy precisely, reduce air consumption, refine your trim, and move through the water without disturbing anything around you. Malta's 15 to 30-metre visibility makes every fault visible and every improvement immediate.

Why buoyancy changes everything

The SSI Perfect Buoyancy course is one of the most useful specialties any diver can complete. Most divers finish their Open Water certification able to stay off the bottom, but true mastery requires understanding the relationship between breath, BCD inflation, and body position at every depth.

Malta is an ideal setting for this work. Visibility at sites like Cirkewwa, Scott's Craig, and the Blue Hole regularly exceeds 20 metres, meaning your instructor can watch your position and trim from a distance and give precise feedback. The rocky limestone seabed gives a clear visual reference without the silt that clouds feedback at sandy sites. Divers who complete this course consistently report longer dive times and noticeably calmer dives.

  • Hover motionless at any depth using breath control alone
  • Achieve flat, streamlined trim without fighting the water
  • Reduce air consumption through controlled breathing and relaxed movement
  • Master proper finning technique to avoid stirring up sediment
  • Fine-tune weighting and BCD use for different exposure suits

SSI Perfect Buoyancy

On successful completion you earn the SSI Perfect Buoyancy specialty certification, recognised by all major training agencies worldwide. The certification is logged directly to your SSI profile and counts as one specialty credit towards SSI Master Diver.

What You'll Cover

Course content

The course runs over two days. Day one covers the theory and confined water work that builds the foundation; day two puts that foundation to work across four open water dives at Malta's most diver-friendly sites.

Day 1: Morning

eLearning and theory review

  • Complete SSI eLearning modules before arrival
  • Briefing on buoyancy physics and Boyle's law in practice
  • How lung volume affects depth at different stages of a breath cycle
  • BCD inflation and deflation timing relative to depth change
  • Weighting principles: why over-weighting is the most common fault
  • Streamlining: cylinder placement, console routing, gauge position
Day 1: Afternoon

Confined water and confined water skills

  • Weight check and BCD setup in shallow water
  • Breath-only hover drill at one metre above the bottom
  • Controlled ascent and descent without BCD adjustment
  • Horizontal trim position and fin kick correction
  • Flutter kick vs frog kick: efficiency and bottom disturbance
  • Buoyancy reference object skills: clearing a hoop without touching
Day 2: Dives 1 and 2

Open water: apply and refine

  • Buoyancy check at the surface before descent
  • Controlled descent using breath, no BCD dump
  • Mid-water hover above limestone reef at 12m
  • Trim review: instructor observes from 4m distance
  • Air consumption tracking: dive time vs previous recorded dives
  • Close-proximity finning near grouper, bream, and moray habitat
Day 2: Dives 3 and 4

Open water: performance dives

  • Neutral buoyancy at multiple depths within a single dive
  • Buoyancy-controlled swim-through navigation at Cirkewwa arch
  • Fin kick efficiency drill: distance covered per breath cycle
  • Perfecting controlled ascent rate (9m per minute) without a line
  • Safety stop at 5m held on breath alone
  • Post-dive debrief and certification sign-off

Dive sites vary with conditions. Your instructor selects the most suitable location on the day.

FAQ

Common questions

Any certified Open Water Diver aged 10 or over. The course is particularly valuable for divers who have completed their Open Water certification and noticed that they are using more air than expected, struggling to stay off the bottom, or exhausting themselves fighting the water. It is also a strong choice for divers returning after a long break who want to rebuild their skills with focused instructor feedback.
Yes. The €102 SSI eLearning fee gives you access to the online theory modules, which you complete at your own pace before the course begins. This keeps the in-water time focused on practical skills rather than classroom work. The modules cover buoyancy physics, breathing technique, weighting, and streamlining. Plan for two to three hours to work through them. Once you enrol, we send you the activation link.
We select sites based on conditions on the day. Common choices include Cirkewwa in the north of Malta, Scott's Craig in Sliema, and the Blue Hole in Gozo for more experienced students. All three offer rocky limestone seabed, clear water with visibility typically between 15 and 30 metres, and calm conditions at the depths we use. The clear visibility is one of the reasons Malta works so well for buoyancy training: you can see your reference point clearly and your instructor can observe your trim from a distance.
Cancellations made more than 7 days before the course start date receive a full refund of the course fee. Cancellations within 7 days forfeit the deposit. The SSI eLearning fee is non-refundable once the access link has been activated, as this is paid directly to SSI. We are happy to reschedule your course at no charge provided you give us at least 48 hours notice. Weather-related cancellations are always rescheduled at no cost to you.
Results vary between individuals, but divers who complete the course regularly report dive times 15 to 25 per cent longer than before. The improvement comes from two places: first, divers stop using unnecessary BCD inflations and deflations that waste energy and disturb their breathing pattern; second, relaxed and efficient movement through the water reduces exertion and therefore breathing rate. The effect compounds over subsequent dives as the habits become automatic.
Yes. Perfect Buoyancy pairs well with the SSI Night and Limited Visibility Diver or SSI Navigation Diver courses. We can schedule both in the same week. Contact us via WhatsApp to discuss a combined package. Each specialty earns a separate SSI certification and counts as a credit toward SSI Master Diver.
