  • SizeBody length up to 7.5 cm. A medium-sized aeolid nudibranch.
  • Social HabitSolitary. Feeds on hydroids and anemones, moving slowly across its prey. The bright colouring is a warning signal to potential predators.
  • HabitatRocky reefs and walls where hydroids and small anemones grow.
  • Depth2 to 40 m. Found across its depth range on suitable rocky habitat.
  • Feeds OnHydroids and small anemones. Stores functional stinging cells from its prey in the tips of its cerata.
  • DistributionMediterranean Sea and adjacent eastern Atlantic. Present in Maltese waters.
  • DescriptionDondice banyulensis is one of the more dramatic-looking nudibranchs in the Mediterranean. Named after the legendary Lady Godiva, its exposed, colourful body is a bold statement on the reef. Like other aeolid nudibranchs, it is a living weapons recycler, incorporating the stinging cells of its cnidarian prey into its own cerata for defence. A rewarding find for macro photographers.

Behaviour & Diet

Feeding Strategy

Preys on hydroids, particularly Eudendrium species, consuming entire polyps and selectively retaining their unfired nematocysts for its own use.

Hydroid feeder

Reproduction

A simultaneous hermaphrodite that deposits narrow, coiled egg ribbons on hydroid stems. Planktotrophic larvae hatch and feed in the water column before settling.

Hermaphrodite

Behaviour & Defence

Boldly coloured in orange, red and white as an aposematic signal. Functional nematocysts stored in its cerata tips deliver a sting when the slug is disturbed.
