Biology
Suspension feeder and scavenger that captures organic particles and small prey from the water using its setose third maxillipeds. Also picks detritus from rocky and rubble surfaces.
Suspension feederFemales carry bright blue or purple egg masses on their pleopods beneath the curled abdomen. Larvae hatch as planktonic zoeae.
Egg carrierRetreats rapidly backwards into rocky crevices using powerful tail flicks. Its compact, spiny body makes extraction by predators difficult once wedged in a crevice.
