Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationA colourful squat lobster with a bright red body marked with vivid blue streaks and lines across the carapace and claws. Long, spiny front claws are held out in front. The abdomen is tucked underneath the body. Not a true lobster but a close relative of hermit crabs.
  • SizeBody length up to 5 cm (excluding claws). Claw span can double the apparent size.
  • Social HabitSolitary or in small groups. Found tucked into crevices and under boulders. Retreats rapidly backward when disturbed.
  • HabitatRocky reefs, boulder undersides, caves, and crevices. Prefers dark, sheltered spaces.
  • Depth0 to 60 m. Common in the shallows to about 30 m.
  • Feeds OnSuspended organic particles, detritus, and small invertebrates. Filter feeds and scavenges.
  • DistributionEastern Atlantic from Norway to the Azores, and throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Common in Maltese waters.
  • DescriptionGalathea strigosa is one of the most colourful crustaceans on Mediterranean reefs, its striking red and blue pattern making it a favourite subject for macro photographers. Despite its name, it is not a true lobster but belongs to a group more closely related to hermit crabs. Look for it in dark crevices and under overhangs, where its blue markings often catch the torchlight.

Found across the Mediterranean, inhabiting reef & open environments. Active from the surface down to 90m depth.

Preferred Environment

Reef & Open habitats, typically at depths of 0-90m. Most commonly encountered by divers at the shallower end of its range.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.

Feeding Strategy

Suspension feeder and scavenger that captures organic particles and small prey from the water using its setose third maxillipeds. Also picks detritus from rocky and rubble surfaces.

Reproduction

Females carry bright blue or purple egg masses on their pleopods beneath the curled abdomen. Larvae hatch as planktonic zoeae.

Behaviour & Defence

Retreats rapidly backwards into rocky crevices using powerful tail flicks. Its compact, spiny body makes extraction by predators difficult once wedged in a crevice.
