  • DistributionEastern Atlantic from Scandinavia to Morocco, and throughout the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Abundant in Maltese rock pools.
  • DescriptionPalaemon elegans is one of the first marine animals that snorkellers and rock-poolers encounter in Malta. Nearly transparent, it is easiest to spot by looking for the shadows it casts on the pool floor or the movement of its antennae. Despite its small size, it is an important link in the coastal food web, both as consumer of organic matter and as prey for fish and birds.
