Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationVery small blenny with a rounded head and short, fringed orbital tentacles. Reddish-brown to olive body with darker bars. Males develop brighter red tones during breeding. A distinctive dark spot at the front of the dorsal fin.
  • SizeUp to 7 cm total length, commonly 3 to 5 cm.
  • Social HabitSolitary and territorial. Males guard nest sites in small holes.
  • HabitatRocky intertidal and very shallow subtidal zones. Found in holes and crevices on sun-exposed rocks.
  • Depth0 to 10 m, predominantly intertidal to 3 m.
  • Feeds OnAlgae and tiny invertebrates from rock surfaces.
  • DistributionMediterranean Sea. An endemic species.
  • DescriptionNamed after the Croatian naturalist Spiridion Brusina, who used the name Zvonimir. This small endemic blenny is common in the intertidal zone but easily confused with other Parablennius species. The dark spot on the front of the dorsal fin helps distinguish it. A typical rock-pool inhabitant that tolerates the extreme conditions of the intertidal.
