Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationLarge, elongated, torpedo-shaped body built for explosive speed. Silver-grey body with faint dark chevron markings on the flanks. Large mouth with prominent teeth. Lower jaw has a yellowish tint inside.

  • Social HabitFound in schools as juveniles, becoming more solitary with age. Schools sometimes spiral in cylinder formations.

  • DescriptionThe Mediterranean's barracuda, an impressive predator that patrols reef edges and wreck sites. Schools of juvenile barracuda are a common sight at many Maltese dive sites, sometimes forming mesmerising spiral formations. Adults are solitary hunters capable of explosive bursts of speed. Despite their fearsome reputation, they pose no threat to divers.

Preferred Environment

Reef & Open habitats, typically at depths of 0-40m. Most commonly encountered by divers at the shallower end of its range.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.

Feeding Strategy

A fast pursuit predator that hunts schools of small fish using explosive acceleration. Targets silverside, bogue and other shoaling species.

Spawns pelagic eggs in open water during the warmer months. Juveniles shelter in shallow, protected areas.
