Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationExtremely small, almost completely transparent body. Internal organs and skeleton visible through the skin. Large eyes relative to body size. Males develop dark pigment during breeding.

Habitat & Distribution

Found over sandy and muddy bottoms from the shallows to about 80 metres, forming large schools in the water column above the substrate. Present in Maltese coastal waters, particularly over sandy bays.

Preferred Environment

Sandy and muddy seabeds in sheltered coastal areas. Schools hover just above the bottom during the day.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.
