Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationSmall scorpionfish with a stocky body and spiny head. Reddish-brown to mottled red colouration. Skin flaps on the head less elaborate than larger scorpionfish. A dark spot on the spinous dorsal fin between spines 6 and 8.

  • Social HabitSolitary and sedentary. Sits motionless on rocky surfaces relying on camouflage.

Like all scorpionfish, it has venomous dorsal spines, though the sting is milder than that of the larger red scorpionfish.

Encounter Tips
