Range
Found on soft, sandy and muddy substrates across the Mediterranean from around 10m to 200m depth. Most common on the outer continental shelf over fine sand and silt.

Prefers sandy and muddy seabeds where it lies partially buried and well camouflaged. Most frequently encountered by divers over open sand patches in the 10-40m range.
Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.
Biology
A small carnivore that feeds on tiny crustaceans, polychaete worms, and other benthic invertebrates disturbed from the sand.
Benthic predatorSpawns pelagic eggs in open water during spring and summer. Larvae are symmetrical and transition to flatfish form as they settle to the seabed.
