Detail

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.

Behaviour & Diet

Feeding Strategy

A swift predator that chases flying fish, small pelagic fish, and squid at high speed. Hunts near the surface, often leaping clear of the water during pursuits.

High-speed hunter

Reproduction

Spawns in warm offshore waters. Growth is extremely rapid, with individuals reaching maturity within their first year. Lifespan is relatively short.

Fast-growing spawner

Behaviour & Defence

Exceptional swimming speed is the primary defence. The vibrant colour change upon death suggests its living colours may serve as disruptive camouflage in sunlit surface waters.
