Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationSmall blenny with a robust body and a large head. Males develop a prominent fleshy crest on the head during breeding and turn dark with vivid pale markings. Females are smaller and plain brown.

Habitat & Distribution

Common in shallow rocky and artificial habitats across the Mediterranean. Readily colonises harbour walls, jetties, and coastal infrastructure as well as natural rocky shores.

Preferred Environment

Found on rocky substrates, harbour walls, and any hard surface with suitable crevices in the shallows. Males establish territories around nesting cavities in rocks or man-made structures.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.

An omnivorous grazer feeding on algae, small crustaceans, worms, and organic material scraped from hard surfaces within its territory.
