Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationSmall grouper-like fish with an elongated body. Distinctive colour pattern: sandy body crossed by 5 to 7 dark vertical bars, with blue lines on the head and a red to blue horizontal stripe along the body.

  • Social HabitSolitary and territorial. Occupies a fixed home range on rocky reefs. A simultaneous hermaphrodite.

  • DescriptionOne of the most recognisable small predators on Mediterranean reefs, the painted comber wears a bold pattern of dark bars and colourful stripes. Like its relative the comber, it is a simultaneous hermaphrodite. It sits alertly near rocks, dashing out to snatch passing prey. A curious fish that often holds its ground when approached by divers.

Found across the Mediterranean, inhabiting reef & open environments. Active from the surface down to 40m depth.

Preferred Environment

Reef & Open habitats, typically at depths of 0-40m. Most commonly encountered by divers at the shallower end of its range.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.
