Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationSmall blenny with a rounded head and bushy, branched orbital tentacles. Body is greenish-brown to grey with darker vertical bars and a pattern of pale spots. Fringed tentacles above the eyes are prominent.

Found on rocky reefs, harbour walls, and artificial structures in shallow water across the Mediterranean and warm Atlantic. Common and widespread in suitable rocky habitat.

Preferred Environment

Prefers hard substrates with crevices in shallow water, including natural rocky reefs, breakwaters, and harbour infrastructure. Often seen perched on rocks with its head protruding from a hole.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.

Feeding Strategy

Primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae and biofilm scraped from rock surfaces. Will also consume small invertebrates and detritus opportunistically.

Males establish and defend nesting cavities. Eggs are deposited on the cavity walls by visiting females and guarded by the male until hatching.
