Found from the surface to depths of 500 m, though most common between 10 and 200 m. Occurs over all substrate types, moving between deep and shallow water seasonally.

Favours open water over the continental shelf. Often encountered in large schools around underwater structures, harbour walls, and areas with strong water movement.
Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.
Biology
Actively hunts small fish, crustaceans, and planktonic organisms. Schools feed collectively, moving through the water column to follow prey concentrations.
Schooling predatorSpawns in batches from spring through summer in open water. Eggs are pelagic, and larvae develop in surface waters before forming juvenile schools.
