Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationStreamlined mullet with a small golden or yellow spot on the gill cover. Blue-grey back, silver flanks with faint longitudinal stripes. Relatively small head with thin lips.

Preferred Environment

Coastal waters, harbours, lagoons, and estuaries. Often found near the surface in schools. Tolerant of brackish and occasionally fresh water. Feeds over sandy and muddy bottoms as well as on algae-covered surfaces.

Encounter Tips

Watch for schools of silvery mullet near the surface in harbours and sheltered bays. The golden opercular spot is visible at close range and confirms identification.
