Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationSmall goby with a pale golden-yellow to sandy body and faint darker markings. Large eyes and a rounded head. The overall warm golden tone is distinctive among Mediterranean gobies.

Preferred Environment

Rocky Reef habitats, typically at depths of 5-80m. Most commonly encountered by divers at the shallower end of its range.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.

Feeding Strategy

Feeds on tiny benthic invertebrates, copepods and organic particles from rocky and sandy substrates. Forages close to its shelter within a small home range.

Reproduction

Males guard clutches of eggs deposited on rock surfaces or inside empty shells. The male fans and defends the eggs until hatching.

Its golden, semi-transparent body blends with sandy and rocky substrates. Retreats into crevices and under stones when threatened.
