Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationDeep, oval body with a steep forehead. Silver-grey body with a distinctive golden band between the eyes and a golden spot on each gill cover. Faint dark blotch at the start of the lateral line.
  • SizeUp to 70 cm total length and 7 kg, commonly 25 to 45 cm.
  • Social HabitFound in small groups or solitary. Juveniles form schools in shallow coastal waters.
  • HabitatSandy bottoms, seagrass beds, rocky reefs, and lagoons. Often near mussel farms and shellfish beds.
  • Depth0 to 150 m, most common between 2 and 30 m.
  • Feeds OnMolluscs, crustaceans, and sea urchins crushed with powerful molar-like teeth. Capable of cracking open thick shells.

Gilthead seabream are the most commonly farmed marine fish in the Mediterranean. Wild individuals are powerful shell-crushers, using their molar teeth to crack open mussels, clams, and sea urchins with impressive force.

Reef & Open habitats, typically at depths of 0-40m. Most commonly encountered by divers at the shallower end of its range.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.

Feeding Strategy

A powerful crusher of hard-shelled prey including mussels, sea urchins and crabs, using its strong molar-like teeth. Also takes worms and algae.

A protandrous hermaphrodite, maturing as male at age 1-2 then becoming female from age 2-3. Spawns in autumn and winter in deeper offshore waters.
