Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationSmall goby with a pale sandy body marked by four distinct dark spots along the base of the dorsal fins. Head is relatively large with high-set eyes.

Habitat & Distribution

Lives on sandy and muddy seabeds from shallow coastal waters to around 90 metres. Common in Maltese waters over sandy bays and gently sloping soft substrates.

Preferred Environment

Open sandy and muddy bottoms with minimal vegetation. Often partially buried or resting on the surface of the sediment.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.
