Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationVery long, laterally compressed body with an extremely elongated beak lined with fine teeth. Dark blue-green back and silver flanks. Body is noticeably flattened from side to side compared to other needlefish.
  • SizeUp to 140 cm total length, commonly 60 to 100 cm.
  • Social HabitUsually solitary or in very small groups near the surface. Lurks near floating objects.
  • HabitatSurface waters of the open ocean and coastal areas. A pelagic species that stays close to the surface.

Preferred Environment

Inhabits the very top of the water column in warm, clear open waters. Most often seen near the surface in offshore areas or around floating debris and current lines.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.

Feeding Strategy

A fast pursuit predator that chases down small schooling fish near the surface. Uses its elongated jaws to snatch prey with sideways strikes.

Spawns in open water. Eggs have sticky filaments that attach to floating debris or seaweed at the surface.
