Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationRobust, laterally compressed body with fused beak-like teeth forming a parrot-like 'beak'. Males are grey-green with reddish fins. Females are reddish-brown. Scales are large and coarse.
  • SizeUp to 50 cm total length, commonly 20 to 35 cm.
  • Social HabitFound in small groups or harems of one male with several females. Males are territorial and defend feeding areas.
  • HabitatRocky reefs with abundant algal cover. Prefers warm, clear water with healthy algal turf.
  • Depth1 to 50 m, most common between 3 and 20 m.
  • Feeds OnAlgae scraped from rock surfaces using its beak-like teeth. A dedicated herbivore that plays an important role in controlling algal growth on reefs.
  • DistributionEastern Atlantic from Portugal to the Canary Islands and throughout the Mediterranean Sea.
  • DescriptionThe only parrotfish in the Mediterranean, easily recognised by its fused beak-like teeth used to scrape algae from rocks. Like tropical parrotfish, it produces sediment as a byproduct of feeding. Once common, populations have declined in many areas due to spearfishing, but it is recovering in marine protected areas.

Habitat & Distribution

Found across the Mediterranean, inhabiting rocky reef environments. Active from the surface down to 50m depth.
