Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationSmall, oval flatfish with both eyes on the left side. Dark brown with irregular blotching and a fringe of short tentacle-like processes around the head margin. Rough, ctenoid scales.
  • SizeUp to 20 cm total length, commonly 8 to 12 cm.
  • Social HabitSolitary and strictly bottom-dwelling. Lies flat on the substrate, relying entirely on camouflage.
  • HabitatRocky bottoms and coarse substrates, often attached to the underside of rocks and boulders. Unlike most flatfish, prefers hard substrates over sand.
  • Depth10 to 200 m, most common between 20 and 80 m.
  • Feeds OnSmall crustaceans and worms found on rocky surfaces.
  • DistributionEastern Atlantic from the British Isles to Morocco, including the Mediterranean Sea.
  • DescriptionAn unusual flatfish that attaches itself to the underside of rocks and boulders rather than lying on sandy bottoms like most flatfish. Its rough scales help it cling to vertical and overhanging surfaces. Divers occasionally find one when looking under boulders.

Habitat & Distribution

Found across the Mediterranean, inhabiting reef & open environments. Active from the surface down to 40m depth.

Detail

Preferred Environment

Reef & Open habitats, typically at depths of 0-40m. Most commonly encountered by divers at the shallower end of its range.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.

Behaviour & Diet

Feeding Strategy

Feeds on tiny benthic invertebrates and organic particles on rock surfaces. Forages at night on the hard substrates it clings to.

Micro-predator

Reproduction

Spawns small pelagic eggs in spring and summer. Very little is known about its reproductive behaviour due to its cryptic lifestyle.

Egg layer

Behaviour & Defence

Its flattened, mottled body is almost invisible against rocky surfaces. Can cling firmly to vertical walls and overhangs where predators are less likely to search.
