Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationLarge, heavy-bodied grouper with a massive head and wide, powerful jaws. Dark olive-brown to grey-green body with irregular pale yellowish blotches. Large, prominent eyes. Rounded tail.
  • SizeUp to 150 cm total length and 60 kg, commonly 40 to 80 cm.
  • Social HabitSolitary and strongly territorial. Adults defend home caves and territories against intruders. Remarkably curious toward divers.
  • HabitatRocky reefs, wrecks, caves, and boulder fields. Strongly associated with caves and overhangs used as daytime resting sites.
  • Depth5 to 300 m, most common between 10 and 60 m.
  • Feeds OnFish, cephalopods, and crustaceans. A sit-and-ambush predator that strikes from the shadows of its cave.
  • DistributionEastern Atlantic from the Bay of Biscay to South Africa, including the entire Mediterranean Sea.
  • DescriptionThe iconic Mediterranean grouper and one of the most memorable encounters a diver can have. Large, mature dusky groupers are remarkably docile and curious, often approaching divers with an almost dog-like inquisitiveness. Historically overfished, populations are recovering in marine protected areas. They can live for over 50 years and are protogynous hermaphrodites.

Preferred Environment

Reef & Open habitats, typically at depths of 0-40m. Most commonly encountered by divers at the shallower end of its range.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.

Feeding Strategy

An ambush predator that feeds on fish, octopus and crustaceans. Waits motionless near rocky overhangs before engulfing prey with a rapid suction strike.

A protogynous hermaphrodite that transitions from female to male around age 12. Spawns in summer at established sites, with males guarding territories.
