Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationMedium-sized goby with a robust body. Pale sandy to grey-brown with distinctive dark ladder-like markings along the flanks. A dark spot at the base of the pectoral fin. Head is large and rounded.
  • SizeUp to 10 cm total length, commonly 5 to 8 cm.
  • Social HabitSolitary and territorial. Males guard eggs deposited on the underside of rocks.

Preferred Environment

Sandy / Muddy habitats, typically at depths of 1-30m. Most commonly encountered by divers at the shallower end of its range.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.

Behaviour & Diet

Feeding Strategy

Feeds on tiny benthic invertebrates, copepods and amphipods picked from rocky surfaces. Forages within a very small home range close to its shelter.

Reproduction

Males guard eggs deposited on the underside of rocks or inside empty shells. The male fans the clutch to provide oxygen until the larvae hatch.

Behaviour & Defence

Its small size and cryptic, pale colouration help it blend with rocky and sandy substrates. Retreats into narrow crevices when disturbed.
