Reef & Open habitats, typically at depths of 0-40m. Most commonly encountered by divers at the shallower end of its range.
Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.
Biology
Hunts fish, crabs and cephalopods using its acute hearing to detect prey in low-light conditions. Most active at dusk and dawn when it emerges from shelter to feed.
Crepuscular hunterSpawns during summer, producing distinctive drumming sounds using its swim bladder to attract mates. Eggs are pelagic and larvae develop in open water.
