Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationElongated, oval body with a small head and large golden-yellow eyes. Silver-grey body with faint yellow longitudinal lines along the flanks. Small mouth positioned low on the head.
  • SizeUp to 40 cm total length, commonly 15 to 25 cm.
  • Social HabitHighly gregarious, forming large, dense schools that move over reefs and seagrass beds.
  • HabitatRocky reefs, seagrass meadows, and sandy bottoms. Found in both coastal and offshore waters.

  • DescriptionOne of the most abundant fish in the Mediterranean, recognisable by its golden eyes and silvery body. Schools of bogue are a constant presence on reef dives. Interestingly, bogue that eat certain algae can accumulate toxins that cause hallucinations in humans when consumed, a phenomenon known as ichthyoallyeinotoxism.

Preferred Environment

Reef & Open habitats, typically at depths of 0-40m. Most commonly encountered by divers at the shallower end of its range.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.

Feeding Strategy

An omnivore that feeds on plankton, algae and small invertebrates. Often seen in mid-water schools filtering planktonic organisms with its gill rakers.

Reproduction

Spawns pelagic eggs in spring, with peak activity between March and May in the Mediterranean. Juveniles recruit to shallow coastal waters and seagrass beds.

Forms large, tightly packed schools that make it difficult for predators to single out individuals. Can accelerate rapidly to escape threats.
