  • SizeUp to 70 cm total length, commonly 25 to 40 cm.
  • Social HabitHighly gregarious, forming fast-moving schools that patrol reef edges and open water.
  • HabitatCoastal and offshore waters, around reefs, wrecks, and oil platforms. Pelagic and fast-moving.
  • DepthSurface to 100 m, most common in the upper 30 m.
  • Feeds OnSmall fish, shrimp, and other crustaceans caught during fast-paced hunting runs.
  • DistributionTropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean, occasionally entering the Mediterranean Sea.
  • DescriptionA swift, powerful jack that is an uncommon but exciting visitor to Mediterranean waters. Blue runners hunt in coordinated schools, herding baitfish against the surface before attacking from below. Behaviour & Diet

Feeding Strategy

An aggressive pursuit predator that hunts small fish, squid, and crustaceans in coordinated schools. Feeding frenzies are common when baitfish are cornered against the surface.

Reproduction

Spawns offshore in open water during warmer months. Eggs and larvae are pelagic, drifting with currents until juveniles settle closer to coastal habitats.

Pelagic spawner

Behaviour & Defence

Relies on speed and the confusion effect of tight schooling to evade predators. The streamlined body allows rapid acceleration when threatened.
