Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationDeep, oval body with a small head and mouth. Grey to dark grey-brown body, darker on the back. Males become very dark, almost black during breeding. A silver bar may be visible on the flanks.
  • SizeUp to 60 cm total length, commonly 20 to 35 cm.
  • Social HabitSchooling species that gathers in large groups around reef structures and wrecks. Breeding aggregations form in spring.
  • HabitatRocky reefs, wrecks, seagrass beds, and mixed substrates. Often seen in midwater near vertical structures.
  • Depth5 to 300 m, most common between 10 and 50 m.
  • Feeds OnAlgae, small invertebrates including worms, crustaceans, and molluscs. An omnivorous grazer.
  • DistributionEastern Atlantic from Norway to Senegal, including the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
  • DescriptionA common and familiar sight on Mediterranean reef dives, where schools of black seabream hang in midwater near drop-offs and walls. This species is a protandrous hermaphrodite, starting life as a male and transitioning to female. The males turn dramatically dark during spawning season.
