Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationStocky, heavily-built scorpionfish with a large, spiny head and wide mouth. Highly variable colour from dark brown to black, red, or mottled grey. Numerous skin flaps and tentacles on the head. Venomous dorsal spines.
  • SizeUp to 37 cm total length, commonly 15 to 25 cm.
  • Social HabitSolitary and sedentary. A master of camouflage that sits motionless for hours on rocky surfaces.
  • HabitatRocky reefs, boulders, walls, and areas with abundant algal growth. Blends perfectly with its surroundings.
  • Depth2 to 800 m, most common between 5 and 50 m.
  • Feeds OnSmall fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates ambushed from its camouflaged position.
  • DistributionEastern Atlantic from the British Isles to Morocco, including the entire Mediterranean and Black Sea.
  • DescriptionThe most common scorpionfish in the Mediterranean, found on almost every rocky dive site. Its camouflage is so effective that divers regularly swim past without noticing. The dorsal spines deliver a painful sting if touched, so buoyancy control is essential. Despite its fearsome appearance, it is a prized food fish in many Mediterranean cuisines.

Habitat & Distribution

Found across the Mediterranean, inhabiting rocky reef environments. Active from the surface down to 40m depth.
