Identification & Biology

  • IdentificationRobust goby with a rounded head and thick body. Colour ranges from dark brown to black with subtle paler mottling. First dorsal fin is tall and often has a dark spot at the rear.
  • SizeUp to 18 cm total length, commonly around 10 to 13 cm.
  • Social HabitSolitary or found in loose proximity to others over suitable habitat. Males become territorial during breeding season and guard eggs in shells or under stones.
  • HabitatSandy and muddy bottoms, estuaries, lagoons, and sheltered coastal waters. Often near seagrass beds or among scattered rocks on soft ground.

It is regularly seen by divers resting on sandy patches between rocks, often propped up on its fused pelvic fins. Males darken significantly during breeding season.

Habitat & Distribution

Found on sandy and muddy bottoms in harbours, lagoons, estuaries, and sheltered bays from the waterline to around 50 metres. Common in Maltese harbours and sandy bays.

Preferred Environment

Soft sandy and muddy seabeds in sheltered coastal environments. Often found near harbour structures, jetties, and in lagoons.

Encounter Tips

Best approached slowly and calmly. Avoid casting shadows directly over the animal. Neutral buoyancy and patience increase encounter success significantly.
